Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics basketball team plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference the National Basketball Association (NBA). The history of the Boston Celtics began in the Basketball Association of America (BAA). When the BAA dissolved into the NBA, the Boston Celtics joined as one of the initial seventeen basketball teams. One of the greatest achievements in Boston Celtics history came from the team winning the NBA Championship for eight straight years, from 1959 to 1966.
The present Boston Celtics logo was created in 1996. It displays the Celtics name in white surrounded by a green circle. Inside the circle stands a Celtic man with a shamrock covered vest and white pipe in his mouth. In his right hand he holds a basketball balance on his finger, while he leans on a walking stick in his left hand. The original logo designer was Zang Auerbach, brother to the Boston Celtics head coach, Red Auerbach.
Since the beginning the Boston Celtics basketball team played the games without cheerleaders, or dancers. Though almost all of the other teams hired dancers, Red Auerbach believed dancers for the Celtics to be unnecessary. Basketball should be about basketball, not scantily clad women. In November 2006, a first ever Boston Celtics cheerleaders announcement stunned fans. In January 2007, the Celtics also announced the nomination of three Boston Celtics dancers to participate in the first-ever NBA All Star Dance Team.
In 1990 law case between the Celtics and a player found its way to fame. The Boston Celtics v. Brian Shaw dispute ended when the court found that Brian Shaw had to keep his promise under the five year contract he signed with the Boston Celtics basketball team and could not break it to join an Italian basketball team. This case is still read in law school contract classes.
Dennis Johnson of the Boston Celtics joined the team in 1983 and played for the team until 1990. After a miserable former season, the Celtics took on new life with Dennis Johnson leading them to the championship.
Stacks of Plaques offers a collectible framed Boston Celtics 1986 photo signed by Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale, Bill Walton and Robert Parish. The memorabilia features a nameplate and individual pictures of the five players in action for the 1986 Boston Celtics games. A must for die hard Boston Celtic fans.
