New Jersey Nets
The New Jersey Nets basketball team plays in the Eastern Conference under the Atlantic Division in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team joined the American Basketball Association (ABA) as the New Jersey Americans in the 1967-68 basketball season. They were one of the original eleven basketball teams to play in the ABA. They changed their name to the New York Nets in the second season after a reporter suggested the team find something to rhyme with baseball's Mets and football's Jets, two other New York sports teams. They won two ABA Championships in 1974 and 1976.
In 1977, the team moved to New Jersey where they changed their name to the New Jersey Nets. The New Jersey Nets relocation took them to East Rutherford, New Jersey. Bruce Ratner and American rapper "Jay-Z" Shawn Carter co-own the franchise. Lawrence Frank of Indiana is the team's current head coach.
The New Jersey Nets logo shows the Nets name in 3D white and red letters over a silver basketball. These rest inside a 3D blue and silver shield with a red white and blue hoop surrounding it. Their jerseys display colors of blue, white, red and silver.
The New Jersey Nets cheerleaders perform cheers and dance routines in front of fans and players at their team's home games. The New Jersey Nets dancers are a group of professional dancers from all over the country. They hold dancer auditions in June.
Players on the New Jersey Nets 2002-2003 roster included Jason Collins of Stanford, Jason Kidd of California, Aaron Williams, Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson. New Jersey Nets Hassan Adams of Arizona joined the team during the second draft picks in 2006. Other rookie players on the 2006-07 roster include Josh Boone of Connecticut, Mile Llic of Serbia and Montenegro, and Marcus Williams of Connecticut.
Though they have yet to win a NBA Championship, the New Jersey Nets won one American Basketball Association Division title in 1974. They also won four Division titles and two Conference titles in the National Basketball Association.
