However, there are groups that believe the donkeys are being abused or mistreated in this hilarity. While the owners deny this claim, animal rights groups tout that the animals are whipped and beaten into playing the game. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) strongly believe that the donkeys are mistreated in order for the players to ride them and the owners to use them for the game. There currently is no evidence to support their claims. In addition, donkey basketball is, and always will be, a charity event. The money raised goes to great causes.

Other than donkey basketball, wheelchair basketball is also growing in popularity. Wheelchair basketball is a difficult sport, requiring extreme balance and the love of the game. Players must have tremendous upper physical strength and endurance. Wheelchair basketball has entered the Olympic arena in the Paralympics Games. What is unique about wheelchair basketball is that it maintains most of the major rules of regular basketball, including the height of the basket – it is not lowered to accommodate the players. Wheelchair basketball was first played between WWII veterans in 1946 in the United States. Since then, it has bloomed into popularity and is now governed by the International Wheelchair Basketball Association.

Donkey basketball and wheelchair basketball are, in fact, more popular in some areas of the world than regular basketball. Both have been used for charity functions, and wheelchair basketball is popular among not only the physically disabled people, but also among the able bodied. Both play the game, and able bodied players use wheelchairs and adhere to the rules of wheelchair basketball.
