History Of Basketball

The history of basketball is an interesting and intriguing story. It began in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891 by Canadian teacher, Dr. James Naismith. It became popular and more sophisticated as time wore on.

The history on basketball indicates that the popularity of the sport surpassed all expectations, especially of the creator of basketball. Within a year, it became a part of the history of women's basketball. Women attacked the sport in 1892 when physical education teacher, Senda Berenson of Smith University amended the rules to suit women better. According to the history of women’s basketball, it took a strong foothold into the high schools, for the girls. The basketball history indicates that the rules of basketball were formed around the rules of the children's game "Duck on a Rock."

The basketball history timeline is clouded. It is reported that the NCAA was not formed until much later. However, Naismith and Berenson were key people vying to get basketball into colleges and universities. Thus began the history of college basketball. According to the NCAA basketball history, the organization was not created for many years, with its predecessor, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association (IAA) being created nearly a decade after the birth of basketball.

The college basketball history is much longer than the NBA. In women’s college basketball history, teams were more popular than the men's teams. The Duke Basketball history is long, with many championships under their belt, for both the men's and women's teams. The University of Kentucky basketball history is a little shorter, and they too have many championships with the NCAA.

The NCAA basketball championship history is long and arduous. Most schools have are invited to play in the championship. Currently, only 64 schools play and a 65th is added as a "seed." These are all based on win-loss records.

NBA basketball history began in 1949. The first professional game was held in Toronto Canada three years earlier between the New York Knickerbockers – now known as the Knicks – and the Toronto Huskies. The Huskies eventually stopped being a team, and now the Toronto Raptors have taken over the large city. However, the history of NBA basketball has been growing ever since. With more and more players, more and more teams, the association have grown into an international phenomenon that tugs at the heartstrings of many. Basketball has become extremely popular in the United States and in some parts of Canada.
