He had five children with his first wife – three girls and two boys – and his first wife passed away after 43 years of marriage. Two years later, he married again, and unfortunately passed away after five months of marriage.
During his 43-year marriage, he became the inventor of basketball, published three books and received an honorary master’s degree. He also became the director of the physical education department of the YMCA Training School and spent 19 months in France as a result of his nomination as the YMCA Secretary.
At the end of his five-month marriage, Dr. Naismith suffered a brain haemorrhage. Nine days later, he passed away due to a heart attack. He died in his home, with his wife at his side. After his death, he was voted into the Physical Education Instructors of America as a life member.
Dr. Naismith had many accomplishments in his life. Many believe that his greatest ones are his education and his books. However, true sports fans believe that Dr. James Naismith's greatest accomplishment was the invention of basketball. If Dr. Naismith knew how popular basketball became, he would be honoured and proud.
