Northwest Division
The Northwest Division is one of six divisions listed in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Northwest Division stands as one of three divisions in the Western Conference. When the NBA approved the Charlotte Bobcats as an expansion team in 2003, they created the Northwest Division. The Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, Seattle Super Sonics and Utah Jazz all compete in this Division. The Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz were transferred from the now non-existent Midwest Division. Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Super Sonics came from the Pacific Division.
The Seattle Super Sonics won the first Northwest Division title in 2005. Denver Nuggets won it in 2006 and Utah Jazz took the title in 2007.
Weekly Northwest Division reports are listed on each of the division's NBA websites, Sportline and other expert professional basketball websites. Fans watch the playoffs through national basketball television coverage on CBS.
In the playoffs, each division team competes against the other teams in their division. They then go on to compete against teams in the other divisions in their conference. Then they compete against the opposite conference. Eventually, the winners of the finals compete against each other. The final winning team wins the NBA Championships for that year. Though the Seattle Super Sonics won an NBA Championship in 1979, they have yet to win one under the Northwest Division.
The draft picks within the Northwest Division for 2006-07 brought the Portland Trail Blazers an A+ when LaMarcus Aldridge of Texas, Brandon Roy of Washington, Sergio Rodriguez of Spain, and Joel Freeland of England joined the team. The Denver Nuggets traded Leon Powe to Boston for a second round pick. Utah Jazz welcomed Ronnie Bower of Arkansas, Dee Brown of Illinois, and Paul Millsap of Louisiana Tech to their team. The Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Randy Foye of Villanova, Craig Smith of Boston College, and Loukas Mavrokefalidis of Czech Republic. And the Seattle Super Sonics brought in Saer Sene of Senegal, Denham Brown of Connecticut, and Yotam Halperin of Israel.
In the 2007 Western Conference Finals, as of May 14th, Utah Jazz won three to one against the Golden State Warriors. Utah Jazz's fourth game victory over the Warriors came with a score of 115 to 101.
Originally, the NBA held only three divisions, the Western, Central, and Eastern divisions. As the number of teams grew, six NBA divisions were created to fairly separate each of the thirty National Basketball Association professional basketball teams.
