Pacific Division

The Pacific Division is part of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is a division in the Western Conference with teams that include the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Sacramento Kings. The Houston Rockets once held a spot in the Pacific Division. In 2003, the NBA approved a re-alignment that created six divisions. The other five are the Atlantic Division, the Central Division, the Southeast Division, the Southwest Division and the Northwest Division. In the 2004 to 2005 season, the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Super Sonics left the Pacific Division to the newly created Northwest Division. The five remaining teams have been active in the division since 2004.

The teams compete against each other for the division's championship. The teams play eighty-two games in the regular season schedule. The games are separated into forty-one home games and forty-one away games. Each team plays two home and two away games against every team in their division. Then they play against the other teams inside their conference three or four times each before facing opponents outside their conference. The object is to make to the playoffs where the winning teams compete for the National Basketball Association Championship.

NBA home court advantage in the playoffs is based on regular season record. Many claim the new system is better, though flawed. While others wonder why the NBA made six divisions instead of two, the East and West.

In the 2006 drafts, Randy Foye and Alexander Johnson were traded twice before the drafts end. The Los Angeles Clippers picked up Paul Davis from Michigan and Guillermo Diaz from Miami. The Golden State Warriors drafted Patrick O'Bryant from Bradley and Kosta Perovic from Serbia. Quincy Douby of Rutgers joined the Sacramento Kings. J. R. Pinnock from George Washington and Jordan Farmar of UCLA joined the Los Angeles Lakers.

In the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, the Phoenix Suns succeeded against the other teams and won the Pacific Division. They won seven Division titles to this day. In the 2006-07 season, the Phoenix Suns received hats to celebrate their Pacific Division Championship. They received some backlash for celebrating a division championship.

The Los Angeles Clippers have yet to win a division title. The Los Angeles Lakers won eighteen divisions titles since they joined the National Basketball Association. The Sacramento Kings won two. The Golden State Warriors won two.

Many basketball fans are already hard at work blogging their predictions for the team they believe will win the Pacific Division Championship title in 2008.
