NCAA Basketball Champions
College basketball teams from all over the United States participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournaments. These teams compete for the NCAA Basketball Champions title. Games are televised by CBS.
Past NCAA Men's Basketball champions include teams from Syracuse Orange, Kentucky Wildcats, UCLA Bruins, Georgetown Hoyas, and Indiana Hoosiers. The Florida Gators beat out the other teams and became the 2006 NCAA Basketball Champions. For the second year in a row, the Gators won the 2007 NCAA Men's Basketball champions with the Ohio State Buckeyes taking second place. UCLA Bruins and the Kentucky Wildcast made NCAA basketball champions history as two teams with the most point wins.
In 2005 the NCAA Men’s Basketball champion team, the North Carolina Tar Heels, defeated Illinois State Redbirds for the win. Louisville Cardinals became the NCAA Men’s basketball champions in 1986 when they made the final four and defeated Duke Blue Devils. The Blue Devils rose against the Kansas Jayhawks as the 1991 NCAA basketball champions with a 103 to 73 point win. Duke returned as NCAA Basketball Tournament champions the following year and again in 2001.
Of all teams on the NCAA Basketball champion list, the UCLA Bruins boast the most division championship wins. From 1971 to 1974, the UCLA Bruins won eighty-eight uninterrupted games. Professional basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played for UCLA before playing in the NBA. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired as a basketball player and serves as special assistant coaches for the Los Angeles Lakers. The Bruins team colors are "true blue" (darker shade of baby blue) and gold. Original colors were navy blue and gold.
Oregon Ducks won the first NCAA basketball championship in 1939. The Oregon Ducks, with team colors of green and yellow, were founded in 1876. Their home games reside at McArthur court in Eugene, Oregon.
College women's basketball joined the NCAA in 1982 with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs earning the NCAA Basketball Champion title. Past NCAA Basketball champions for the women's teams include the Maryland Terrapins, Purdue Boilermakers, Texas Tech Red Raiders and Southern California Trojans. After hard play and perseverance, the Tennessee Lady Vols defeated Rutgers Scarlet Knights and became the 2007 NCAA Women’s basketball champions.
