Seattle Supersonics

The Seattle Super Sonics basketball team is based in Seattle, Washington. They professionally play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In 1967, they joined the league as one of two expansion teams, with the San Diego Rockets (now known as the Houston Rockets). They are one of three professional basketball teams in Seattle. The other two are the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners. The SuperSonics hold place as one of seven professional basketball teams in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference.

Al Blanchi coached the team through their first season with drafted players such as Walt Hazzard, Al Ames Tucker, Bob Frank Rule, and Lawrence (Larry) Melvin Bunce. After losing their first season, Walt Hazzard was traded to the Atlanta Hawks before Lenny Wilkins coached the SuperSonics.

The original Seattle SuperSonics logo consisted of a supersonic jet that left the team's name and ascended from a basketball. Six different logos were created since then. The present day logo, with the traditional green and gold color scheme, celebrates both the Seattle Super Sonics heritage and the start of a new era.

On June 1, 1979, the Seattle SuperSonics won the Pacific Division and moved through the playoffs. They beat the Washington Bullets 97 to 93 and won their first and only NBA Championship. This win also gave the city of Seattle their first major league sports championship. Jack Sikma, Dennis Johnson, Gus Williams, and Fred Brown were among other prominent players that helped the team's success. The Seattle SuperSonics continued their advancement to the finals through to the mid-1990s.

In 1980 the coach of the Seattle Super Sonics was Leonard (Lenny) Randolph Wilkins. In April 2007, Wilkins gained another title as team president to the Seattle Super Sonics. He is known worldwide as the coach with the most wins in basketball.

In the 1986-87 basketball season, the Seattle SuperSonics won games against the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets in the playoffs before they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers during the Western Conference finals.

Former college basketball player, Dwane Casey of the Seattle Supersonics, rose from assistant coach to head coach alongside Nathaniel "Nate" McMillian. After eleven seasons, Dwane Casey's tenure with the Seattle SuperSonics came to an end. He also coached the Timberwolves for a season and a half.
