Charlotte Bobcats

The Charlotte Bobcats joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2004 as an expansion team after Charlotte's former team, the Charlotte Hornets, moved their franchise to New Orleans. In 2003, the franchise narrowed their name down to three choices, Bobcats, Dragons and Flight before settling on Bobcats. 2004 also marked the first year to hold six league divisions within the NBA. The Charlotte Bobcats basketball team plays in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference in the NBA.

The Charlotte Bobcats played their first home games in the Charlotte Coliseum in North Carolina. In October 2005, the Charlotte Bobcats Arena opened to the public. Charlotte officials continue to see great economic impact of the Charlotte Bobcats presence in their city. The sign above the box office reads, "Greetings from Charlotte, Gateway to the Corners of the Carolinas".

The Charlotte Bobcats logo has an orange bobcat head racing beneath a blue Bobcat name. Players wear the Charlotte Bobcats jerseys in colors of white, orange, dark blue, light blue and black. Fans can purchase Charlotte Bobcats merchandise with their favorite team player's name and number at stores carrying NBA Charlotte Bobcats official gear.

The Charlotte Bobcat owners are Robert L. Johnson, Michael Jordan and Cornell Haynes (better known as Nelly, a singer and rap star from Saint Louis, Missouri). When the NBA Board of Goveners granted him the expansion NBA Charlotte Bobcats in 2003, Robert L. Johnson became the first African American to become a majority owner of a professional sports organization. Bernie Bickerstaff coaches the team as head coach.

The Charlotte Bobcat Dancers make numerous appearances in the community throughout the year. High quality professional dancers make up the squad. They held tryouts for the 2006-07 year on June 11, 2006.
