Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets basketball team, first named the San Diego Rockets, joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1967 as an expansion team. The NBA lists them in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The Houston Rockets basketball team won two NBA Championships and four Division Championships.

Houston Rockets history shows in the 1970s the Rockets basketball team played in the AstroHall, the Astrodome, Hofhienz Pavillion with little success with fans. As their game improved, fans took notice. The team sold out the Hofhienz Pavillion in 1975-76 season. They then moved to the Summit. Currently, the Houston Rockets play their home games in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

The Houston Rockets logo includes a shadowed red hoop surrounding a rocketing letter "R". A red rocket forms part of the letter.

The Houston Rockets introduced their mascot, Clutch the bear, in 1995. Clutch received the Mascot of the Year award in 2005. Robert Boudwin released his book in 2006, "Clutch's Day at the Doctor", with a story for children who are afraid to go to the doctor. Fans enjoy watching Clutch's stunts of being shot out of a cannon or dunking a basketball in the hoop. He also dances with the Power Dancers and provides comedic relief in between game times.

The 1986 Houston Rockets roster included players Robert Reid of Saint Mary's, Mitchell Wiggins of Florida State, Steve Harris of Tulsa, and John Lucas Sr. of Maryland. Legendary Robert Reid of the Houston Rockets is also known as the "king of rebound attack".

In 2007, fans voted the Houston Rockets Power Dancers number one among the NBA dancer teams. Each year the team creates a Houston Rockets Power Dancers Calendar. Long lines stretch through the concourse as fans wait to get an autograph the day of its release.

The current Houston Rockets roster lists Yao Ming of China, who is one of the tallest basketball players in the world. Other players include Steve Novak of Marquette, Bob Sura of Florida State, Juwan Howard of Michigan and Vassilis Spanoulis of Greece.
